National Academies of Sciences: Birth Settings Matter

This 90 second video has important summaries of the challenges in maternity care and a website of free reports, issue briefs etc.

The National Academies of Science, Engineering & Medicine created these resources based on bipartisan legislation led by Rep. Roybal Allard and Rep. Herrara Beutler--earlier in winter 2020 the report and webinars were shared but now a complete toolkit with short issue briefs and a video etc are available.

"The setting in which birth takes place is one important part of the maternity care system. Care during pregnancy, childbirth, and early life are important parts of the U.S. health care system, but some childbearing women and newborns do not reliably receive care that is safe, evidence-based, and appropriate. These gaps contribute to inequities in outcomes, particularly for African American and Native American families.

Science shows opportunities for improving care across birth settings. Home, birth center, and hospital birth settings each offer risks and benefits to pregnant people and newborns. While no setting is risk free, we can modify risks within each setting and across settings. And, we can make birth safer for all with greater integration throughout the maternity care system."
