Jill Advises NJHCQI on Maternity Action Plan

Jill was an advisor with several other NJ leaders for NJHCQI to the Maternity Action Plan (MAP) as a complement to the Nurture NJ strategic plan. It aligns with and elevates aspects of Nurture NJ to build sustainable policy change in the state. To provide direction, it draws from the impact of many existing programs, innovative pilots, grant-funded initiatives, and regional activities.

The MAP represents the research, findings, and views of the Quality Institute.

This report contains 11 recommendations in four key areas plus supporting material, all of which are aimed at helping to implement regulatory and policy changes needed to operationalize NurtureNJ. In that regard, the report is for community members, stakeholders, policymakers, regulators, and public and private funders looking to support and accelerate the Nurture NJ Strategic Plan.

About the Project

New Jersey’s maternal health crisis is particularly devastating for Black women, who experience maternal mortality and morbidity at 7 times higher rates than their white counterparts. The Quality Institute, in partnership with many partners and advocates, created the Maternity Action Plan (MAP) to provide a directional path forward to address New Jersey’s maternal health crisis, strengthening and accelerating the Nurture NJ Strategic Plan. The MAP outlines four priorities to improve Maternal Infant Health, address racial disparities and promote equitable care and outcomes:

  • Expanding and diversifying the perinatal workforce.

  • Advancing data collection and use to align it and include patient reported experiences and goals for quality improvement.

  • Creating a holistic payment system that increases access to comprehensive high-quality maternal health services, including behavioral health services.

  • Strengthening economic and social supports for people before, during, and after pregnancy.

By using the MAP and advancing Nurture NJ’s goals, together we will make New Jersey the safest and most equitable place for pregnant individuals to give birth and raise children.
